The Carolina Panthers have re-signed safety Eric Reid to a three-year deal to remain with Carolina through the 2021 season.

According to NFL.com and confirmed by Reid, the deal is worth more than $22 million with incentives that could push the total to $24 million.

“We always knew he was a solid football player,” head coach Ron Rivera said during the season, “And he showed it to us.”

Reid was signed by the Panthers in Week 4 this past season on a one-year $2 million deal. He started 13 games with the Panthers, finishing with 71 tackles, five passes defensed and one interception.

"I'm excited for my family's future," Reid said. "My focus will be doing my job and making sure the guys around me are doing their job."

Controversy surrounded the Panthers' signing of Reid due to his kneeling during the national anthem before games to protest against police brutality and social injustice.Reid filed a Reid filed a collusion grievance against the NFL in the spring of 2018, arguing that's why teams wouldn't sign him or former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Reid continued to kneel prior to games but his teammates continued to say he doesn't cause any distractions on the field or in the locker room.

Throughout the 2018 season, Reid claimed to have been randomly drug tested seven times, causing the NFLPA to launch an investigation, which determined no evidence.

Signing Reid locks up one of the Panthers safety spots. Veteran safety Mike Adams, the starter for the past two seasons, is set to become an unrestricted free agent. Rashaan Gaulden, a third-round draft pick in 2018, played sparingly throughout his rookie season and could be in line for more playing time.

Veteran safety Da'Norris Searcy, who enters the final year of his contract, started the first two games last season, before suffering a concussion that landed him on injured reserve.

Reid has played in 83 games, starting 82 of the contests, and has tallied 448 tackles, 39 passes defensed , 11 interceptions, three fumble recoveries, two forced fumbles and two sacks.

Eric Reid on opting not to test the market: “I feel comfortable here. I was excited just to get it done... I fit well into this defense.”
