Yankees outfielder Giancarlo Stanton suffered a Grade 1 calf strain, manager Aaron Boone revealed Wednesday.

Stanton sustained the injury on Tuesday during workouts and could ultimalty miss the beginning of the 2020 regular season. He missed the majority of last season due to injury, appearing in 18 games.

"It’s gonna be a couple weeks," Boone said, according to WFAN's Sweeny Murti

Last year, the injury-plagued outfielder landed on the injured list with a strained right knee and a Grade 1 left biceps strain. Stanton, under contract for eight more seasons, returned for the final regular season stretch and made 18 plate appearances in the postseason.

Stanton later suffered a quad strain, which forced him to miss the final two games of the AL Championship Series. Stanton, a year removed from recording 100 RBIs in his first season as a Yankee, struggled to remain on the field and ended the disappointing campaign with 13 RBIs and three home runs.

“The injuries he suffered are part of the game,’’ Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told The New York Post in Oct. 2019. “I don’t know if they’re predictive of the future. None of the injuries were his fault and when healthy, he’s one of the better hitters in the game. I expect that to be the case next year."

Stanton felt revitalized entering spring training, telling reporters there would be "no limitations" in his workload. New York is already without pitchers Luis Severino, who will miss the season with Tommy John surgery, and James Paxton, who recovers from back surgery.

The Yankees open their season on March 26 against the Baltimore Orioles. They'll return to Yankee Stadium one week later to host the Blue Jays for their home opener.

"It will probably put us against it a little bit," Boone told reporters. "I would say it's time for him to get back, but then getting built up and stuff. We'll see."
