For the time being, the Patriots seem all-in on the quarterback combination of Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham.

But that doesn't mean earlier in the offseason they weren't exploring some alternative options.

League sources told ESPN.com that the Patriots had "conversations" with Cam Newton early on in the offseason but nothing came of the communication≥

According to Jeremy Fowler, it appears that the free-agent quarterback may wait until training camps resume before signing on with a new team. The delay would allow Newton to potentially meet with teams in person.

The 31-year-old underwent a physical on March 23 (one day before being released by the Panther) after missing 14 games last season with a Lisfranc injury.

According to recent reports, the Patriots are still the odds-on favorite to sign Newton.
