Maybe Tom Brady and Josh McDaniels' relationship wasn't as great as first thought.

According to Gary Myers, formerly of the New York Daily News, Brady had a "deteriorating relationship" with McDaniels, as the quarterback was "worn out" by his offensive coordinator. The report added Brady wanted more input into game plans.

This was part of the reason why he left New England and signed with Tampa Bay this offseason.

At least publicly, Brady and McDaniels had a solid relationship.

“Josh and I have had a great relationship for 18 years, and he’s one of my best friends,” Brady said in 2018 after McDaniels stayed in New England after walking away from the Colts' head-coaching job at the last minute. “I love working with him. We’ve had a very special relationship that I cherish, and it’s been that way for a long time. I always talk to him about everything, and like I said, he’s a great friend to me. I love him. I love his family. We’re very close. When you work together with someone for that long, you have a great rapport and relationship. I’m just happy he’s on our team, I’m happy he’s coaching me, and I want to go out there and do well by him."

McDaniels also released a glowing statement following the quarterback going to Tampa Bay.

"I have so much gratitude for Tom Brady," he said. "He has made me a better coach and more importantly a better person. He has always been genuinely kind and caring to me and my family. Yet at the same time, I have never met anyone as demanding and relentless in his pursuit of improvement, perfection and championships. His work ethic and drive propelled our offense and our team to perform at the very highest level throughout his career. He represented all of us with class and integrity. We will miss his passion and intensity, his character and wisdom, and his preparation and diligence. I will miss all the meetings, FaceTimes, emails and texts in our pursuit of a good play. He always performed his best in the most critical times under the most significant pressure. I have never coached a tougher player in my career.

"Although I feel a great sadness knowing that he is leaving the Patriots, I am grateful for the years we were together and beyond blessed to call him my friend. He has made an indelible impact on my life and career and I will forever be in his debt.

"He defined what it means to be a 'Patriot.' He is the best quarterback to ever play in the NFL. I wish him nothing but great happiness and success in all that he does. There will never be another Tom Brady."

The report is interesting, though, as Brady did not seem very happy in 2019 and that was a year where the Patriots had a lot of young wide receivers, which McDaniels seemed to be behind.
