Nobody can tell Michael Jordan what to do … well except one person. The GOAT will always obey his mama, who was none too pleased that her son, who happens to be the greatest basketball player that ever existed, was smoking a cigar on the set of ESPN’s “The Last Dance” documentary. The Chicago Bulls great conducted multiple interviews for “The Last Dance,” an epic 10-part series that has drawn rave reviews (though notably not from Ken Burns) since debuting last month, but in only one was he seen with a cigar. That’s apparently because Jordan’s mother, Deloris, caught wind of his smoking on set and quickly put a stop to it.

“He said I can’t have a cigar today because my mom got mad at me because she saw me smoking a cigar,” director Jason Hehir told ESPN’s David Jacoby and Jalen Rose on Sunday night’s Last Dance “Aftershow.” It’s rare to see Jordan, a six-time NBA Finals MVP and two-time Olympic gold medalist, without his signature stogie. Throughout the doc, MJ is seen puffing at various intervals including on the golf course, inside the Bulls locker room and in his hotel suite. The Hall of Fame shooting guard and current Charlotte Hornets owner detailed his tobacco affinity during a 2017 interview with Cigar Aficionado, claiming to smoke up to six cigars a day. “The Last Dance” also explores some of Jordan’s other vices including a well-documented gambling habit, a supposed “hobby” that veered dangerously close to an addiction.

The 57-year-old billionaire doesn’t have to answer to many people these days, but it’s good to know Mama Jordan’s words still carry plenty of weight.
