Wait... what inning is it again?
You see, the big league pitcher totally forgot what inning it was. (See kiddos, it even happens to the big leaguers, too!)
Fortunately for the Nationals, Scherzer wasn't pitching. And better still, he wasn't even in the game at the time of his brain malfunction.
Luckily, Scherzer was just cheering on his teammates in the bottom of the 8th inning. Yes, the 8th inning. That is eight of nine, for those keeping score at home.
With the score tied in the last of the 8th and one out and Adam Eaton on base, Anthony Rendon laced a double to the gap. Eaton, flying around the bases, would come into score with a huge dive. And there went Mad Max.

July 7, 2019 Max Scherzer thinking it was a walkoff when Eaton scored the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 8th is one of my favorite things so far this year. He ran out, was so fired up and ready to celebrate.......and then realized he was the only guy out there other than Eaton.

July 7, 2019 The Nats would go on to score two more on a Howie Kendrick double to nail down a 5-2 win to improve their record to 47-42 at the All-Star break.
“And he’s coming home. There’s the winning run,” Scherzer said calmly, “We win . . .”
“And,” he said mockingly, “it’s the eighth inning.”
Oooops.
Oh, well.
