Is Dak Prescott good enough to carry to the Cowboys to a Super Bowl?
“No doubt. No doubt. No doubt. I believe he is. And I think he’s getting better. I think he has so much more room to grow and I think he’ll get there. I think overall, we have a lot of the pieces of the puzzle in place. It’s a matter now of making sure ... the key to any team is, essentially, developing the chemistry, which you definitely need...
“If they can get to that level and develop that chemistry in this timeframe which they have to work with, then I think you will Dak not only flourish and grow, I think you see that team mature and rally behind their quarterback because he has had some challenges this offseason dealing with the loss of his brother as well as this pandemic and other things that have crept up. I think he’ll be fine. I love the kid. No doubt, I think he’ll be fine.”
Is he surprised the Cowboys and Dak haven't come to an agreement on a new deal?
“No, I’m not surprised. If you understand the business of leverage, when you have leverage then you try to set the rules. And the only way you fight leverage is you fight it by establishing your ground and I think at some point this stuff will subside and it’s not that important right now. ... It’s important to press people that need something to talk about because you don’t have much to talk about because we don’t have camps and minicamps and so forth. And now we’re talking about pandemic left and right, 24-7, seven days a week, however you look at it. So you look for something to discuss, but as far as the players go, Dak is not worried whether or not he’s going to get signed. I’m not even concerned. I believe he will get it done. And I believe the Cowboys will get it done because we don’t have room to be playing games or playing chicken.”
On the value of running backs in today’s NFL?
"I don’t think the running back position has been devalued. I think we’ve valued other positions more because of the way the league has grown. When you think about the number of passes throughout the National Football League, the passing game has evolved in such a standard to where they’re throwing the ball a lot more because it’s a lot more sexier, it’s a lot more this and everything else and it produces a lot more points quicker.
“So to make the game entertaining, I think that’s where the league has shifted its focus to and putting it in the hands of quarterbacks like Tom Brady and now you have Patrick Mahomes and you have Aaron Rodgers, you’ve got Drew Brees. You’ve got other great quarterbacks, and Russell Wilson as well, not to mention young Lamar Jackson who is coming up. So you’ve got these quarterbacks that have been ... and Deshaun Watson down in Houston ... I mean think about it.
"You’ve got these guys that are very dynamic and can throw the football as well and the league has kind of shifted in that direction and therefore they don’t see the need to run a run until they have to run the run. So when you have the balance of a team that comes in with a defense that has the skillset in the secondary or the second level that can pair up with your passing game and you’ve got guys that can rush the ball, then you see teams start to rely on the run games a little bit more.”
