The Red Sox' starting rotation has been problematic for much of this young season. But we can rule out one possible addition.

Appearing on the Greg Hill Show Thursday, Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer answered when asked: Dr. Anthony Fauci will not be joining the pitching staff.

Greg Hill: "Do you know all of their names (of the Red Sox' pitching staff) unlike the rest of us?"

Bloom (laughing): "I do."

Hill: "Have you considered adding Fauci to the starting lineup because it couldn’t get much worse."

Bloom (still laughing): "I don’t think it would be in the nation’s interest for us to do that. I think he is too important elsewhere. I’m going to leave aside our baseball evaluation of the good doctor. I’m not sure it would be good for the United States, for us to pull him away from his day job."

Fauci, of course, showed the baseball world his pitching acumen when throwing out the first pitch a week ago in Washington, D.C. at the Nationals' Opening Day.

Fauci's performance set the internet on fire, leading Topps to announce the doctor's baseball card had been sold at a historic rate.

The Red Sox' pitching staff currently owns the fourth-worst ERA (5.83) in Major League Baseball, with its starters carrying a 6.66 ERA (3rd-worst).
